This award is made possible through donations in memory of Professor Akira Miura, who devoted his entire career to teaching, promoting and developing Japanese language education, and his wife Sharlie Miura, a dedicated teacher fostering English as a Second Language education. This award is announced during the fall semester either in the Japanese program (in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures) or TESOL Certificate (in the Department of English). For fall 2025 the award will go to a TESOL Certificate student.
Although this award is based mainly on the applicant’s academic performance, special consideration is given to applicants who are first-generation students or have experienced circumstances that have impacted their educational opportunities.
Eligibility: applicants must be declared in the TESOL Certificate, have sophomore, junior, or senior standing, and with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and above.
